  • Hydrogen Cyanide Sensor Used in Chemical Industry to Detect Hydrogen Cyanide and Prevent Leakage

Hydrogen cyanide (HCN), 27.03 molecular weight, is a colorless transparent liquid, boiling point 25.7 ℃, relative density 0.6884, with bitter almond flavor, is a highly toxic chemical, so that it will be limited in transportation and use. In view of this, some of the major hydrocyanic acid producing countries began to strictly control the production and use of hydrocyanic acid. Hydrocyanic acid is a chemical compound with very specific properties, from which many derivatives can be formed. These derivatives have important uses in the fields of medicine, pesticides, dyes, feed additives, photosensitive chemicals, engineering materials, etc. Most of the products belong to the category of fine chemical intermediates. There are more than 50 manufacturers of global hydrocyanic acid and more than 70 sets of production equipment, with a total production capacity of about 2.2 million tons/year. Among them, the production capacity of hydrocyanic acid by direct method accounts for 70% of the total production capacity, and the production of hydrocyanic acid by acrylonitrile by-product method accounts for 30%. DuPont is the largest producer of hydrocyanic acid in the world, accounting for 20% of the total production capacity. This was followed by Koch, accounting for 15% of the total production capacity, while Evonik-Degussa and SNC + Butachimie accounted for 11% and 10% of the production capacity respectively. In recent years, due to the continuous development of hydrocyanic acid derived products in the world, the production of hydrocyanic acid has been increasing. Hydrocyanic acid has been used as a feedstock for C1 chemistry and is beginning to compete with carbon monoxide chemistry. At present, more and more derivatives of hydrocyanic acid are mainly consumed at home and abroad. The emergence of these derivatives and the increase of production have changed the supply and demand relationship of hydrocyanic acid, and the demand is increasing day by day. Hydrogen cyanide is mainly used in electroplating industry (copper plating, gold plating, silver plating), mining industry (gold and silver extraction), smoking and rodent control in cabins and warehouses, and manufacturing various resin monomers such as acrylic ester, in addition, the substance can also be contacted during the production process for the preparation of cyanide.

Hydrocyanic acid belongs to the highly toxic class. The clinical manifestations of acute hydrogen cyanide poisoning are obvious bitter almond flavor in the exhaled breath of patients, and mild poisoning is mainly manifested as chest tightness, palpitation, increased heart rate, headache, nausea, vomiting, and blurred vision. Severe poisoning is mainly manifested in a deep coma, shallow breathing, paroxysmal convulsions, and even tonic spasm. In World War II, Nazi Germany often used hydrogen cyanide as a lethal gas in the gas chamber.

In view of the highly toxic properties of hydrogen cyanide, it is necessary to monitor its concentration changes in real time in industrial safety production to prevent poisoning safety accidents and unnecessary losses.
